What is Pain during passing motion?

Severe tearing or burning pain felt while passing stools or shortly after is commonly due to a fissure in ano, which is a small tear in the lining of the anus. It can be extremely painful and often makes patients reluctant to pass stools.Sometimes a pus collection near the anus (peri anal abscess ) can also cause pain during passing motion due to pressure effect

What are the symptoms of fissure-related pain during motion?

  • Intense tearing or burning pain during or after bowel movement
  • Bright red blood on toilet paper or surface of stool
  • tightness or difficulty sitting (Spasm of anal sphincter)
  • Discomfort or itching around the anus
  • Fear or avoidance of passing stools due to pain
  • A small pimple or lump felt near the anal opening

What causes pain during passing stools?

Common causes include:

  • Hard or dry stools (constipation)
  • Straining during bowel movement
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Low-fiber diet
  • Dehydration
  • Post-delivery in women
  • Sedentary lifestyle  (causes fissure)
  • In some cases – Crohn’s disease or inflammatory bowel disease

When to see a doctor?

Seek immediate medical help if:

  • Pain persists for more than 2–3 days
  • You notice bleeding or difficulty passing stools
  • Pain affects daily activities or sleep
  • Recurrent fissure symptoms
