Heartburn
What is Heartburn?
Heartburn is a burning sensation or pain in the chest, often mistaken for a heart attack. It occurs when acid from the stomach flows back into the esophagus (food pipe), irritating its lining.
How do I feel Heartburn?
- Burning pain in the chest, especially after meals or at night
- Pain worsening when lying down or bending forward
- Sour taste or acid sensation in the mouth or throat
- Persistent chest discomfort not relieved by antacids
Why do we get heartburn?
Heartburn happens when stomach acid flows back into the food pipe (esophagus). This acid reflux causes a burning pain in the chest, especially after eating spicy or heavy meals, lying down soon after eating, or consuming alcohol or caffeine.
What happens if Heartburn is untreated?
Frequent or untreated heartburn can damage the esophagus, leading to:
- Inflammation (esophagitis)
- Narrowing (stricture)
- Precancerous changes (Barrett’s esophagus)
- Cancer at the lower end of the food pipe
When to see a doctor?
If you experience recurrent irritation, chest pain, discomfort after meals, or pain that doesn’t respond to antacids, consult a gastroenterologist immediately. Early diagnosis can prevent long-term complications.
